About Save Watchung Library
On April 19, 2018, Watchung Borough Council passed a resolution to pursue commercial development of the library property and to close the Watchung Free Public Library, a local institution for more than 80 years; they reiterated that resolution with a similar vote on July 19, 2018. A coalition of residents in the borough united to raise awareness of the library's impending demise, and to show the council that Watchung residents do in fact value a full-service library in the borough.
A consensus has grown in town that Watchung needs to replace the aging building and build a new and better library that can offer much more for its residents, at a reasonable cost and in an appropriate sized space. The Borough Council officially rescinded their resolutions to close on December 6, 2018.
Watchung applied twice for matching funding to the NJ Library Construction Bond Fund. Funds were limited and Watchung Library was not awarded a grant.
Continuing to champion the local free public library, the Coalition urges the Watchung Borough Council to address the many structural limitations and defects of the current building: to come up with a comprehensive rebuilding plan that expands the library's services--rather than a patchwork of inadequate repairs--and to create a community library to serve all residents. Council can draw upon the plans and research that have been done these last twenty years, to implement a viable plan for the Watchung Library.
